Wandering through the woods, taking in the fresh lake air, and exploring the local wildlife – could there be a better recipe for a great day in the great outdoors? Fortunately for us Marylanders, we have no shortage of such outdoor paradises to clear our minds and reconnect us with the natural beauty of our state. And trust me, Piney Run Park and Nature Center is THE place you’re going to want to go to do just that this summer. With a massive lake for boating and fishing, over five miles of hiking trails, and a nature center that’ll get you right up close to some fine specimens of local wildlife, this outdoor playground is a veritable Garden of Eden for nature lovers.
The nature center is a short, shady hike away from the parking lot. You can follow the road if you like, but the dirt trails through the forest offer a much more scenic journey.
Piney Run is Carroll County’s oldest developed park, and it features a 300-acre lake as its centerpiece. The lake is a big draw for recreational fishers.
The park also offers boat rentals if you’d prefer to get a bit more up close and personal with the water! Canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and electric motorboats are all allowed, and there’s plenty of open water to explore.
There are over five miles of scenic and shady trails winding through the woods and around the lake. There’s also plenty of wildlife roaming the park, so be sure to bring your camera along!
After wandering enough you’ll definitely stumble onto the nature center, where you can get a close look at a beehive, a bunch of snakes and other reptiles, and several different raptors and waterfowl kept in pens outside.
The nature center also provides a comfortable and cozy spot to sit and rest your legs before you continue on your hike. The center is open year-round and has a quaint stove to warm you up if you choose to visit in the winter months!
